8 Negative Attitudes that Make You Unhappy

It’s completely normal to feel negative emotions and thoughts sometimes – everyone’s human. But, if you want to take control of your happiness, it’s important to manage those negative attitudes effectively. If you allow your negative feelings to affect your everyday life, you’ll quickly notice unhappiness starting to set in.

However, most people don’t even realize when negative emotions are in full force. So to help you recognize the signs, we’ve put together eight traits that have been proven to make you unhappy.

  1. Always assuming the worst
Pessimism can be a very natural trait for some people, but it’s one that can haunt you. Continually assessing situations and believing something terrible will happen is going to prevent you from enjoying life. Step out of your comfort zone and experience new things.
  2. Judging yourself negatively compared to others
Comparing yourself to others is not a good idea, and it’s only made worse by social media. Instead of wanting what others have or feeling inferior, you should celebrate the great things that you already have in your life.
  3. Blaming others
It’s easy to place the blame on other people to protect yourself. But, in doing so, you’re not taking charge of your own life. When you take responsibility for things that have happened, it’s much easier to find happiness.
  4. Putting yourself down
Another negative attitude certain to affect your wellbeing is self-defeating talk. Telling yourself you can’t do something, or you’re not good enough is a recipe for unhappiness. Be confident and embrace challenges, because you might end up surprising yourself.
  5. Fearing failure
The fear of failure can be the biggest motivation to succeed, but it can also be crippling for some people. On the one hand, you have people who will push hard to avoid failure, but on the other hand, you have people that don’t even try.
  6. Getting stuck in the past
Everyone has a past, but you shouldn’t let that define you. Yes, if you’ve made mistakes or had setbacks, you should learn from them, but then move on and enjoy the present. Dwelling on what’s already happened and can’t be altered is not wise.
  7. Feeling others are more powerful
It’s very unlikely that you’ll see eye-to-eye with everyone that you meet and some people may test your boundaries. But, acting like a victim and feeling like they hold all the power will leave you feeling trapped. Instead, deal with challenging individuals and put yourself first.
  8. Not forgiving yourself
From time to time, you’re bound to make mistakes, but they aren’t a true reflection of you as a person. So, rather than punishing yourself for things you’ve done, use those mistakes to grow as an individual.
